What to Expect?
The Superficial Peel
A superficial peel is just that: superficial. As the lightest type of chemical peel, the treatment removes only the very top layers. It needs no anaesthesia or numbing cream, and because it’s so quick it’s often been called a lunchtime peel. This treatment will rejuvenate the skin with a fresher, smoother appearance but please note it is not deep enough to remove pigmentation, sun damage, wrinkles or acne scarring.
A superficial peel will peel off over the following 3 days, and then begin healing on the 4th or 5th day.
If you are looking for other options to renew your overall skin tone, our microdermabrasion facial also offers another alternative to brighten dull skin.
The Medium Peel
A medium-depth peel is often the standard in chemical peels. A medium skin peel helps remove sun damage, coarseness, sun spots, and other types of pigmentation. It also improves skin texture with the ability to either improve or completely remove fine lines, wrinkles and some types of acne scars. However, it cannot remove wrinkles and scars that run deeper than the peel. You won’t have any ‘raw’ skin underneath as old skin peels away, as new skin is already formed underneath.
A medium peel will also require sedation and intravenous analgesia. With the medication that we provide, you can go home shortly afterwards but you must not drive and have someone to escort you home.
During the next 8 days, you will need to be off work and limit sun exposure by staying indoors. Continue to place vaseline regularly until all the old skin has peeled. On the 8th day, you will also need to return to L’Amour Skin Clinic for a final check-up before you can go back to work and start putting on makeup. Medium peels very rarely have any complications.
Who is a good candidate for a medium chemical peel?
Unfortunately, medium chemical peels work best only for those with light skin.
Darker shades of skin, olive tones or Asian skin carries a higher risk of skin bleaching or other pigmentation complications from the depth of a medium peel. If you have one of the latter types of skin you may be still suited for a superficial skin peel. You can call us over the phone or book and come in for a complimentary consultation to better understand what treatments may be best suited for your skin.
An oxydermabrasion or a hydradermabrasion (ocosmedics peel) may be a good alternative if you are looking for some of the clarifying and anti-aging benefits of a medium peel.
Downtime and After Treatment
A superficial acid peel requires 4-5 days off work after the treatment. A medium peel requires 8 days off work after the procedure.
After the procedure on a medium peel, your face will likely feel warm and tight like it has been sunburned and any pigmentation will likely at first look darker. Remember to also keep hydrated. For 3 months after a medium peel, your skin is likely to be more sensitive to the sun and ultraviolet rays so remember to wear sunscreen.
